White River Clean-Up

“What makes a river so restful to people is that it doesn't have any doubt - it is sure to get where it is going, and it doesn't want to go anywhere else.”Hal Boyle

Visit our website for more details about the location and to sign-up! This event is part of a statewide effort. This project is made possible by the numerous supporting organizations and community members who have already agreed to participate. Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful has joined forces with Indiana American Water and Muncie Sanitary District as local sponsors. The Community Foundation also awarded a Youth Resource Grant for this project.

If weather is not permitting, the clean-up will be hosted on September 19, 2009.

Volunteers remove trash on foot and via canoe. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with lunch or other coordination efforts. Also, individuals are encouraged to bring their own canoe to ensure adequate equipment for the job.

Last year was a huge success! Over 15,000 pounds of trash and garbage

was pulled from the White River during the 2008 White River Cleanup Day.

More than 480 people covered more than 17 miles of river running through Delaware County to remove man-made debris.

Downtown Weed Eradication

A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows. - Doug Larson

The Muncie-Delaware Clean and Beautiful office has once again decided to take on the challenge of eradicating the weeds that have taken hold of the downtown curbs and sidewalks. We will again cover 70+ square blocks of downtown Muncie! This effort is made possible by the Community Foundation of Muncie & Delaware County from the Lousia & Waldo Beebe Grant.

The weed eradication will concentrate on the downtown area from the river to the railroad tracks. This will serve all the downtown business, residents, and the thousands of visitors received each year. It is important to also take into consideration the annual summer festivals hosted downtown and the large crowd that is drawn to enjoy the historic heart of Muncie.

Upcoming Dates for the project are:

Volunteers are welcome!

MDCB would like to further enhance the attractiveness of the (relatively) new Wheeling Avenue promenade by hanging flower baskets from the light posts which are already in place. This project will require the purchase of brackets for the posts and the hanging baskets, along with a process for watering and maintaining the flowers.

It is our hope to accomplish this project by August 2009. Grants from … and donations from Lowe’s have made this project possible. In the future, we hope to hang 12 more baskets on Wheeling spanning to Minnetrista.

Give a Gift for a Lifetime

A long-lasting, earth-friendly way to honor or memorialize a loved one is through MDCB’s “Give a Gift for a Lifetime” tree planting. The gift-giver selects the type of tree and where it is to be planted. MDCB purchases and plants the tree in conjunction with the Muncie Urban Forester and places a marker around the tree with the honoree’s name. Trees must be planted on public property, such as parks, schools, streets, public cemeteries, or on the grounds of non-profit organizations such as churches. All trees are gua ranteed for one year. Trees are generally planted in the spring or fall. The cost is $200 for the tree, planting, and the tag (maybe more for specialty trees). For more information please contact the MDCB office at 289-6222.

Note from the President

Kelly Wolfe, President of Board of Directors

The past six months have been tough ones for MDCB. Due to the current economic climate, donations have been severely lacking. In January, our Executive Director of the past seven years, Jim Reese, resigned. His excellent leadership was and is sorely missed. The board then re-structured the director’s compensation from a regular salary to one generated solely based upon grants. We were fortunate to hire Samantha Sallee, a recent Ball State University graduate, as our new director. Samantha has brought new, “younger” ideas to our organization and was successful in obtaining a grant for downtown weed eradication. Unfortunately, she too is now leaving in order to further her education. We are now once again seeking a new director. This is a part-time position. If you know someone who may be interested, please have them contact me at 284-8776.

We have several new board members and the board remains committed to the MDCB mission. We feel there is need, perhaps greater now than ever, for the projects coordinated and sponsored by MDCB. It is encouraging to have individuals and groups contact us, willing to volunteer for various projects. Our greatest need right now, other than a director, is financial support for beautification projects, like the hanging baskets along Wheeling Avenue for instance. We appreciate your past support and remain optimistic that MDCB will come out of the turmoil stronger on the other side!

From the Desk of the Director

If a cluttered desk signs a

cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?

By Samantha Sallee, Executive Director

Indiana Spring brings plenty of rain and the rain brings new beginnings for plants everywhere. This year’s rain also brought a new director to MDCB.

My name is Samantha Sallee and I’m originally from Wolcott, IN. Soon to be a Ball State Alumni, my studies concerned Pre-Law and Peace Studies. I have lived in Muncie for four wonderful years and am honored to work with the folks at Muncie Delaware Clean and Beautiful. My future aspirations include running a non-profit in the Middle East that pursues democratization and development.

As the seasons change, the summertime heat has brought me a new opportunity. I will be leaving MDCB to pursue a Master’s degree at the American University in Cairo, Egypt.
